Student Voices - YEAR 2021

At Nagoya University on May 31, 2019

――As a part of the Needs Recognition Phase, the aim of which is for students to recognize social challenges and set their minds to them, a PBL workshop was organized with SDGs as the theme, and two faculty members were invited from Olin College of Engineering.

02-1. Workshop that immerses you in English all day

MATSUYAMA Hitoshi, DII 1st-batch student, Majoring in Information and Communication Engineering

“Project-based learning (PBL) in the Olin style” systematizes a way of creating new ideas and team building. First, participants in randomly divided groups wrote down their ideas, etc., on a large number of sticky notes to visualize them and share information, which clarified the direction of thinking of each participant with respect to SDGs.

The participants then formed new teams comprised of members with the same awareness of issues and worked to design solutions by brainstorming about initiatives for SDGs. The two days of discussion in English were much more difficult than listening to lectures, but with the participation of mentors, we were able to summarize our ideas and combine them into a single product.
I was keenly aware of the fact that those who did not share their ideas would be left behind. If you hesitate to express your ideas with the excuse that the discussion is in English or outside your area of expertise, you will be left behind in the discussion.
